How is DevKit different from Toptal?

Toptal is a freelance talent network: you hire an individual freelancer, by the hour or full-time, and manage the engagement yourself. DevKit is an IT staffing partner: we place engineers from our own team and private network on your team for months, back them with our senior engineers, and handle the contract, payroll and replacement.

The difference shows up after day one. With a freelance network, the quality of the engagement depends on the individual. With DevKit, every engineer is supported by senior engineers and tech leads who review code and help with hard problems, and if someone is not the right fit, we replace them at no extra cost and handle the handover.

How do the vetting processes compare?

Both companies screen technically, but in different ways. Toptal describes a five-step process for joining its network: an English language and communication interview, skill assessments, a live screening by Toptal screeners "who are experts in their functional domain", a test project and a track record of "continued excellence". Toptal states that the full process takes three to eight weeks and that typically fewer than 3% of applicants are accepted.

DevKit vets every candidate with a technical interview run by our senior engineers, people who build and ship software themselves, before you see a CV. We vet for the specific role: the stack, the level the work really needs and the way your team works. Then we stay accountable for the match for the whole engagement, which is why we can offer a free replacement.

Which is faster to start?

For a quick introduction, Toptal. Its site says you can hire in under 48 hours and that candidates are usually introduced within 24 hours. DevKit sends vetted CVs within 3–5 business days, and engineers usually start within 2–3 weeks; dedicated teams start in 2–4 weeks.

The reason is the kind of engagement. DevKit places engineers for months, so we take a few days to match the role to the right person and plan the onboarding, instead of introducing whoever is free this week. If you need someone for a few days starting tomorrow, a freelance network is the better tool.

What does each one cost?

Toptal does not publish hourly rates on the pages we reviewed. Its client FAQ states a flat monthly subscription fee of $79, charged if you proceed with talent matching, and that engagements start with a trial period of up to two weeks during which you are not billed if you are not completely satisfied.

DevKit charges a monthly rate per engineer (staff augmentation) or per team (dedicated teams), and a one-time fee per successful hire for recruitment. The rate is shown on every CV before you decide, there is no platform or matching fee, and the first call and shortlist are free. We cannot tell you which is cheaper for your case, because that depends on the people and the rates involved; the honest way to compare is to request a shortlist and put the numbers side by side.

What happens if it does not work out?

Toptal's answer is the trial: up to two weeks in which you are not billed if you are not satisfied, and the option of a second no-risk trial with another expert. If an expert is unavailable at scheduled times, Toptal credits the time billed.

DevKit's answer is a replacement at no extra cost at any point in the engagement, with a handover so the work keeps moving, plus monthly terms with no long-term lock-in. In practice, you never carry the risk of a bad match alone.

Contracts, IP and compliance

With DevKit you sign one contract with DevKit Agency LLC in the US or DevKit Agency OÜ in the EU, whichever suits your procurement and legal teams. An NDA and full transfer of IP are standard, the engagement is GDPR-compliant, and DevKit handles payroll, taxes and contractor compliance. You never contract with individual engineers.

Toptal's contract, NDA and IP terms are not published on the pages we reviewed; they are set out in Toptal's client agreement. We did not want to characterise terms we have not read, so this row stays "not published".

How we made this comparison

Every statement about Toptal on this page comes from Toptal's own public pages, listed under Sources, as they read on the date shown at the top. Quotation marks indicate Toptal's exact wording. Where we could not find a fact on those pages, we say "not published" rather than guess. We do not rank companies or claim to be the best; we describe what each offers so you can decide.

DevKit vs Toptal: FAQ

Is DevKit a Toptal alternative?

For hiring software and AI engineers for months at a time, yes. DevKit places vetted engineers from its own team and private network through staff augmentation, dedicated teams and tech recruitment. For short hourly freelance work, a freelance network like Toptal is the closer fit.

Does DevKit use freelancers like Toptal?

No. DevKit's engineers come from its own team and private network, join your team for months, and are backed by DevKit's senior engineers and tech leads. You sign one contract with DevKit, not with individual engineers.

Is DevKit cheaper than Toptal?

We cannot say honestly, because Toptal does not publish hourly rates on the pages we reviewed and rates depend on the person. Can I try a DevKit engineer before committing?

You get a free shortlist with no commitment, interview the engineers yourself, and work on monthly terms with no long-term lock-in. If the engineer is not the right fit, we replace them at no extra cost and handle the handover.

Can I hire a DevKit engineer full-time?

Yes. DevKit offers tech recruitment for in-house roles with a one-time fee per successful hire, and we can discuss moving an augmented engineer to your payroll.
