What does an AWS engineer do?
An AWS engineer designs, automates and runs cloud infrastructure on Amazon Web Services. They choose the right services for each workload, define infrastructure as code with Terraform or AWS CDK, and keep systems secure, reliable and cost-efficient.
DevKit AWS engineers work with serverless and container platforms, networking, security and CI/CD, and join your team in your tools and processes. Every one of them passes a technical interview with our senior engineers before you see their CV.
When to hire one
- Designing or reviewing an AWS architecture
- Moving infrastructure to Terraform or AWS CDK
- Running containers on ECS or EKS and serverless workloads on Lambda
- Reducing the AWS bill without hurting reliability
What our AWS engineers do
Typical work our AWS engineers take on for clients.
Cloud architecture
AWS architectures sized for your workload, with clear trade-offs between cost, scale and resilience.
Infrastructure as code
Terraform or AWS CDK that makes every environment reproducible, reviewed and versioned.
Serverless and containers
Lambda, API Gateway and Step Functions, or containers on ECS, Fargate and EKS.
Security and networking
VPC design, IAM least privilege, secrets management and encryption set up from the start.
Cost optimisation
Right-sizing, Savings Plans, storage tiers and clean-up of idle resources that cut the monthly bill.
CI/CD and observability
Deployment pipelines, CloudWatch metrics, alarms and tracing that make production behaviour clear.

Matched to your budget: which level do you need?
We match the level to the work, so you don't pay senior rates for tasks a mid-level engineer handles well, or put critical work on the wrong hire.
Junior
Well-defined tasks with guidance
Bug fixes, tests and smaller features in an established codebase, with a senior on your team to review their work. The most budget-friendly option.
Mid-level
Independent feature work
Builds features end to end in an existing architecture with little supervision. The best value for most product teams.
Senior
Complex features and ownership
Owns complex parts of the system, makes sound technical decisions and mentors others. Worth it where mistakes are expensive.
Tech lead / Architect
Architecture and team leadership
Designs the system, sets standards and leads other engineers. Ideal for new products, rewrites or a team without technical leadership.

Hiring AWS engineers: FAQ
How quickly can I hire an AWS engineer through DevKit?
You usually receive vetted AWS CVs within 3–5 business days, and the engineer typically starts within 2–3 weeks of the first call. If the fit isn't right, we replace them free of charge.
Do your AWS engineers use Terraform or AWS CDK?
Both. Our AWS engineers manage infrastructure as code with Terraform or AWS CDK, and run workloads on Lambda, ECS, Fargate and EKS. They also set up IAM, VPC networking, CI/CD and CloudWatch monitoring. Tell us your stack and we'll match to it.
Do I need a senior AWS engineer?
Not always. If your architecture is set and someone senior reviews changes, a mid-level engineer often handles day-to-day infrastructure work for less. For a new cloud architecture, a migration to AWS, security hardening or a large cost-reduction effort, a senior engineer or tech lead is usually worth it. We'll recommend the right level on a free call.
How much does it cost to hire an AWS engineer?
Staff augmentation is billed as a monthly rate per engineer, depending on the level and stack. Tell us your budget and we'll match AWS engineers to it; exact rates come with the first CVs.
