What does a cybersecurity engineer do?

A cybersecurity engineer protects software, data and cloud infrastructure by finding vulnerabilities, fixing them and building controls that stop new ones from reaching production. In product teams this usually means application security reviews, automated security testing in CI/CD, cloud and identity hardening, and support during penetration tests and audits.

DevKit cybersecurity engineers work with OWASP guidance, SAST and DAST tools, and the security services of AWS and Azure, and help you meet standards such as ISO 27001, SOC 2 and GDPR. Every one of them passes a technical interview with our senior engineers before you see their CV.

When to hire one

  • Reviewing the security of an application before launch or an audit
  • Adding security testing and checks to your CI/CD pipeline
  • Hardening cloud accounts, networks and access management
  • Preparing evidence and fixes for ISO 27001, SOC 2 or GDPR requirements

What our cybersecurity engineers do

Typical work our security engineers take on for clients.

Application security

Code and design reviews against OWASP guidance, threat modelling and fixes for vulnerabilities in web and mobile apps.

DevSecOps

SAST, DAST, dependency and container scanning built into CI/CD, with findings your developers can act on.

Cloud security

Secure configuration of AWS and Azure accounts, networks, secrets and logging, using native security services.

Identity and access management

Least-privilege roles, single sign-on, MFA and access reviews across your cloud and internal tools.

Penetration-testing support

Scoping and preparing for penetration tests, then triaging and fixing the findings with your team.

Security reviews and compliance support

Policies, controls and technical evidence that help you meet ISO 27001, SOC 2 and GDPR requirements.

Matched to your budget: which level do you need?

We match the level to the work, so you don't pay senior rates for tasks a mid-level engineer handles well, or put critical work on the wrong hire.

Junior

Well-defined tasks with guidance

Bug fixes, tests and smaller features in an established codebase, with a senior on your team to review their work. The most budget-friendly option.

Mid-level

Independent feature work

Builds features end to end in an existing architecture with little supervision. The best value for most product teams.

Senior

Complex features and ownership

Owns complex parts of the system, makes sound technical decisions and mentors others. Worth it where mistakes are expensive.

Tech lead / Architect

Architecture and team leadership

Designs the system, sets standards and leads other engineers. Ideal for new products, rewrites or a team without technical leadership.

Hiring cybersecurity engineers: FAQ

How quickly can I hire a cybersecurity engineer through DevKit?

You usually receive vetted cybersecurity CVs within 3–5 business days, and the engineer typically starts within 2–3 weeks of the first call.

Which security tools and practices do your engineers use?

Mainly OWASP guidance and threat modelling for application security, SAST and DAST tools such as SonarQube, Semgrep, Snyk and OWASP ZAP in CI/CD, and the native security services of AWS and Azure for cloud and identity. They help you meet standards such as ISO 27001, SOC 2 and GDPR.

Do I need a senior cybersecurity engineer?

Not always. If your security approach is defined and someone senior sets priorities, a mid-level engineer often delivers the same results for less, for example running scans, fixing findings and maintaining pipeline checks. To design your security architecture, lead audit preparation or protect critical systems and sensitive data, a senior engineer or tech lead is usually worth it. We'll recommend the right level on a free call.

How much does it cost to hire a cybersecurity engineer?

Staff augmentation is billed as a monthly rate per engineer, depending on the level and specialisation. Tell us your budget and we'll match cybersecurity engineers to it; exact rates come with the first CVs.
